Tips and Tricks to Eliminate and Prevent Back Pain During Pregnancy
- Explore some new sleeping positions. Try sleeping on your side if your normally sleep on your back. Keep one or both knees bent, as if in a fetal position. You may want may to place a pillow or rolled up towel between your knees or under your stomach.
- Put the high-heels away! (Do we really need to tell you that?) Wear low-heeled shoes that have good arch support and that feel good. Consider getting some so-called "maternity pants" that have supportive waistband.
- Check with your doctor first - but if she or he is ok with it - engage in light exercise. Remember what we said in an earlier page about the stresses and strain of carrying new weight and adjusting to posture changes? Well, do some light exercise that will help relieve that strain and stress. Swimming, walking around the block or on a treadmill are all potential ways of exercising.
- Get a "treatment." Are you the type of person that needs an excuse to get a massage? Now you have an excuse. Take advantage of it. Some massage therapists have training in prenatal massage. Feldenkrais is a gentle bodywork that can also be useful. And of course, you can take a nice warm bath, massage yourself or ask someone close to you to rub your back. A little TLC can go a long way.
- Pay attention to how you move. We are going to put up some audio lessons to help you attend to and change your movement. For now, consider - have you adjusted to your new body dynamics and weight? Do you have a stool or pillow to put under your feet to take the pressure off your lower back? Have your lowered your office chair to achieve the same effect? Are you sitting down whenever you need to?
- Lifting. This is a difficult one, because we rarely pay attention to how we lift objects. But next time you lift something, take a moment before you lift and think it through in your mind. Visualize. Can you bend your legs and "sqaut" and pick up that object in the easiest way?
